What Is A Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel uses a carefully selected acid solution to accelerate the shedding of dead and damaged cells from the surface of the skin. By loosening the bonds that hold those cells together, the peel reveals the fresher skin beneath and prompts the skin to renew itself faster than it would naturally.
Peels are graded by strength, from very superficial versions that simply brighten, through to medium-depth peels that address pigmentation and scarring. A chemical peel works in three stages:
- 1. Exfoliation: The acid solution loosens the bonds between dead surface cells so they can be shed evenly.

- 3. Regeneration: In the deeper layers collagen production is stimulated, gradually improving firmness, tone and clarity.

- Treatment: The solution is applied in layers and left on for a controlled time. You may feel warmth or mild tingling, which settles quickly.
- Aftercare: Depending on the depth, skin may look pink and feel tight, with light flaking from day two to five. Daily SPF and gentle moisturising are essential.
Superficial peels give an immediate glow with little visible peeling, while medium-depth peels produce more obvious flaking and more significant correction. A course of four to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart delivers the best results for pigmentation and scarring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a chemical peel hurt?
Most clients feel warmth, tingling or mild stinging for a few minutes while the solution is on the skin. It is easily tolerated, and a cool fan is available during stronger peels.
What is the downtime after treatment?
It depends on the depth. Superficial peels cause mild redness for a few hours with little visible flaking. Medium-depth peels leave the skin pink and tight, with noticeable peeling from day two to five.
How many sessions will I need?
For general brightening a single peel makes a visible difference. For pigmentation, acne or scarring, a course of four to six sessions two to four weeks apart gives far better results.
Will my skin actually peel?
Not always, and visible peeling is not a measure of how well the treatment has worked. Lighter peels often cause only slight dryness while still accelerating cell turnover underneath.
Can I have a peel if I have darker skin?
Yes, but the choice of acid and strength matters a great deal. Deeper skin tones carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, so we start conservatively and may prime the skin beforehand.
