What Is Hormone Analysis?
Hormone analysis is a blood test and clinical consultation designed to measure the hormones that regulate energy, mood, sleep, metabolism, libido and reproductive health. Hormones work as a connected system, so a single result in isolation rarely tells the full story — the value comes from interpreting the whole picture alongside your symptoms.
At MedSkin Studios your panel is chosen around what you are actually experiencing rather than being a fixed list, and timing matters: some hormones need to be tested at a particular point in your cycle or at a specific time of day. You then have a follow-up consultation to go through the results properly and agree what happens next.
Hormone analysis follows three stages:
- 1. Consultation: Your symptoms, cycle, medical history and lifestyle are discussed so the right panel and the right timing can be chosen.
- 2. Blood Test: A simple blood sample is taken in clinic and sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis.
- 3. Results & Plan: Your clinician takes you through the findings in context and agrees a personalised plan, referring you onward where that is the appropriate step.
Targeted Treatment Areas
Hormone analysis is particularly useful if you are experiencing:
- Energy & Mood: Persistent fatigue, low mood, irritability, brain fog or poor sleep with no obvious explanation.
- Cycle & Fertility: Irregular or absent periods, severe PMS, perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, or difficulty conceiving.
- Metabolism & Body Changes: Unexplained weight change, hair thinning, adult acne, excess hair growth or reduced libido.
Key Benefits of Hormone Analysis
- Answers, Not Guesswork: Replaces assumptions with objective measurement of what is actually happening in your body.
- Tailored Panels: Tests are selected around your symptoms and timed correctly rather than applying a generic list.
- Identifies Root Causes: Frequently uncovers thyroid, iron, vitamin D or reproductive hormone issues behind long-standing symptoms.
- Proper Interpretation: Results are explained in context by a clinician, not simply handed over as numbers on a page.
- Informs Other Treatment: Findings often explain skin, hair or weight concerns and shape how those are best treated.
- A Clear Baseline: Gives you a reference point to measure future changes and treatment response against.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
- Initial Consultation: A detailed discussion of your symptoms, cycle, medications and family history to determine which hormones to test and when.
- Preparation: You may be asked to attend at a specific time of day, at a particular point in your cycle, or fasted, depending on the panel chosen.
- Blood Draw: A straightforward blood sample is taken from your arm, taking only a few minutes.
- Results Consultation: Once your results return, usually within a few working days, you have a full appointment to discuss them and agree next steps.
Results are typically available within a few working days and are always discussed with you rather than simply emailed over. Where findings point to a condition that requires specialist or GP care, we will explain that clearly and support you in arranging the right onward referral.
Frequently Asked Questions
What hormones are tested?
It depends entirely on your symptoms. Panels commonly include thyroid function, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin and cortisol, often alongside iron studies, vitamin D and B12.
Do I need to prepare for the blood test?
Sometimes. Certain hormones vary through the day or across your menstrual cycle, so you may be asked to attend early in the morning, on particular cycle days, or fasted. You will be told exactly what is needed beforehand.
How long do results take?
Usually a few working days, depending on the panel. Your results consultation is arranged once everything has returned so it can all be discussed together.
Will you prescribe treatment based on my results?
Where it is appropriate and within our clinical scope, yes. Some findings are better managed by your GP or a specialist, and if that applies to you we will say so clearly and help arrange the referral.
Can hormone issues affect my skin and hair?
Very often. Thyroid dysfunction, androgen excess, iron deficiency and perimenopausal changes all commonly show up as hair thinning, adult acne, dryness or dullness. Identifying the cause makes treating the skin far more effective.
