What Is SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen microneedling is a collagen induction treatment that uses a medical-grade device fitted with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny, depth-controlled punctures are read by the body as micro-injuries, triggering a natural wound-healing response without damaging the surface of the skin.
That healing response floods the treated area with growth factors and stimulates fresh collagen and elastin, remodelling the skin from within. At MedSkin Studios the needle depth is adjusted for each area of the face and for your individual concern, and the treatment can be combined with PRP or exosomes for a deeper regenerative effect.
The skin’s response to microneedling unfolds in three stages:
- 1. Inflammation: The body detects the micro-channels and begins healing, increasing blood flow and clearing away damaged cells.
- 2. Proliferation: New collagen and elastin are laid down as fresh tissue forms and small blood vessels regenerate.

What to Expect During Your Treatment
- Consultation: Your skin is assessed, your medical history reviewed and a plan agreed, including the number of sessions likely to be needed.

- Treatment: The device is passed methodically across each area at a depth chosen for your concern. Most clients describe a light vibration or mild scratching sensation.
- Aftercare: Your skin will look flushed and feel warm, much like mild sunburn, usually settling within one to two days. You will be given aftercare guidance and advised to avoid make-up, exercise and sun exposure.
A course of three to six sessions spaced around four weeks apart gives the most significant results, particularly for scarring. Improvements continue developing for up to six months after your final session as the new collagen matures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is microneedling painful?
It is very manageable. A strong numbing cream is applied for around half an hour beforehand, after which most clients feel only light pressure, vibration or a mild scratching sensation.
What is the downtime after treatment?
Expect redness and mild swelling similar to light sunburn for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, sometimes with slight flaking on days three to five. Most clients are comfortable wearing mineral make-up after a day.
How many sessions will I need?
Three to six sessions spaced about four weeks apart for most concerns. Established acne scarring generally needs the higher end of that range, followed by occasional maintenance.
When will I see results?
Many clients notice a glow within a week. Genuine improvements in texture and firmness appear from four to six weeks and continue building for up to six months as collagen remodels.
Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Microneedling works mechanically rather than with heat or light, so it carries a much lower risk of pigmentation change than laser treatments and is suitable for all skin tones.
