What Is Dermal Filler?
Dermal fillers are smooth gels made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the skin and holds many times its own weight in water. Injected beneath the surface, filler replaces volume that has been lost with age, restores structure to areas that have flattened, and can refine features that have always bothered you.
Because hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring, results feel soft and integrate with your own tissue rather than sitting on top of it. At MedSkin Studios we assess the whole face before choosing a product and placement — different areas need very different gel thicknesses, and the goal is always facial balance rather than simply adding volume.
Your filler appointment follows three clear stages:
- 1. Facial Assessment: Your practitioner examines your facial proportions, volume loss and natural asymmetries, then agrees a plan and product choice with you.
- 2. Injection: Filler is placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula at the correct depth for the area. Most products contain local anaesthetic for comfort.
- 3. Moulding & Review: The gel is gently shaped, the result is checked with you in the mirror, and a review two weeks later confirms the final outcome.

- Treatment: Filler is injected slowly at the correct depth using a needle or cannula. Most areas take fifteen to thirty minutes.
- Aftercare: Mild swelling, tenderness and occasional bruising are normal for a few days. Avoid exercise, alcohol, heat and facial treatments for twenty-four to forty-eight hours.
Swelling settles within a few days and the filler fully integrates with your tissue over roughly two weeks, which is when we review you. Results generally last six to eighteen months depending on the product used, the area treated and your own metabolism.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does dermal filler hurt?
Discomfort is minimal. Most fillers contain local anaesthetic and numbing cream is applied for sensitive areas such as the lips. Clients typically describe brief pressure rather than pain.
What is the downtime after treatment?
Very little. Expect some swelling and tenderness for two to three days, and occasionally a small bruise. Lips swell the most and are usually settled within a week.
How long does filler last?
Typically six to eighteen months. Thinner gels used in the lips and tear troughs break down faster, while firmer products placed on bone in the cheeks or jaw last longest.
Will I look overdone?
Not when it is done properly. We treat conservatively and build gradually across appointments rather than overfilling in one session, and we will always advise against treatment that would not suit your face.
Can filler be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. This is a clinical decision made after assessment, and our doctor will discuss it with you.
